Chapter 7 Ideal Body Weight / Body Mass Index ____________________________________________________________________________________________
The "IBW / BMI" screen below is for calculating and specifying various estimates of "ideal" body weight, body mass index and related values for adults. For assessing growth in children see the "Pediatric Growth" screen in chapter 11.
Figure 7.1 - IBW/BMI
Screen How to Use This Screen:
1) Normally you access this screen by selecting the button on the "Person / Start" screen.
2) If you had input the person's sex, age, height and weight on the "Person" screen then this data will fill in here automatically. If not enter values in the fields on lines 1 and 2. To clear data use the button.
3) Next select Frame size on line 3. Tap the appropriate "S", "M" or "L" button.
4) Based on the sex, age, height, weight and frame size you should see the actual BMI (at 3:L). You should see the table fields on lines 6 thru 10 fill in as well.
5) You may wish to change the BMI range values on line 6. Changing the range values (22 and 25 in the above example) will change the BMI low, high and "avg" values shown to the right.
6) Once the various "ideal" weight estimates are showing in lines 6 thru 10, you can select any weight by tapping the appropriate one from the "Low", "High" and "Avg" column values. Or you may choose to enter a weight directly in the "IBW" field (at 11:K).
7) You may want to write down the estimated IBW (at 11:K) at this point.8) To go to the next screen, "Wt Change %", tap the button at the top right corner of the screen.Field / Line Explanations
Line 0: See Chapter 3 "The Way Things Work” for details on the standard screen buttons .
Line 1: "Sex" field. Change the gender / sex by tapping the "M" or "F" button to the right of the field.
"Age" field. The "Age" field is for documenting the person's age in years. Enter the age directly OR… tap the "yrs" button to jump to the "Age from Birthdate" screen.
Line 2: "Height" and "Weight" fields. Use the "Height" and "Weight" fields for entering these measurements for the person. To convert from one type of unit to another tap the label.
Line 3: "Frame" field. The "Frame" field is for documenting the person's frame "size" of Small, Medium or Large. Tap one of the "S", "M" or "L" buttons to select frame size OR… tap the button to pop-up an info window showing wrist and elbow measurements corresponding to the small, medium and large frame sizes.
"KH" button. The "KH" button is for accessing the Knee Height calculation screen described in the next chapter. Knee height measurements can be used to estimate the height of a person for which it is inconvenient or impossible to measure their height normally.
"BMI" field. This field shows the actual Body Mass Index (BMI) for the person based on entered height and weight. See line 6 below for the calculation of BMI / Weight Range calculations.
Line 6: "BMI" weight ranges line. This line is for calculating the weight range (low, high, average of low and high) for a person of this height based on the BMI range numbers. Set the low and high BMI in the first two fields by entering them directly or using the pop-up lists by tapping the triangles directly above the fields.
Line 7: "Quick +/-10" line. This line calculates the "ideal" body weight estimates using the "Quick" method. This method is also referred to as the "Hamwi" formula. This value is shown in the "Avg" field. The low and high fields represent plus and minus 10% of this average value.
This formula is based on the following logic:
MALE: 106 lb. for 60" of height plus 5 lb. for each 1" over 60". For each inch under 60", 2.5 lbs. is subtracted from 106 lbs.
FEMALE: 100 lb. for 60" of height plus 5 lb. for each 1" over 60". For each inch under 60", 2.5 lbs. is subtracted from 100 lbs.
To adjust for frame size, 10% is added for large frame person, and 10% is subtracted for someone of small frame. These correspond to the low and high weight fields on this line.
Line 8: "Met. Table" line. This line displays the "ideal" body weight estimates using the 1983 Metropolitan Weight for Height tables. The Nutrition Assistant adds one inch to height values before doing the table lookup on Metropolitan Tables.
Line 9: "Ger. Table" line. This line calculates the "ideal" body weight estimates using the Geriatric Weight for Height tables. This line will only show for people age 65 or older.
Line 11: "Tap # to select" line & "IBW" field. This "Tap # to select" label reminds you that you can tap any of the Low, High, Avg column figures to fill-in the "IBW" field with the best estimate OR… you can fill in the "IBW" value field with your own choice of IBW.
Line 12: "PQA" & "+/-10%" buttons. The "PQA" button brings up the Para/Quad/Amp IBW screen. The "+/-10%" button brings up an information window showing -10 and +10 percent of the selected IBW.
"Wt dif" & "%" fields. These fields show the difference in amount and percentage between the selected IBW and the person’s current weight.
