COMPU-CAL was born in 1982 when Candy Mattson,R.D., then in private practice, could not calculate food exchange diets fast enough. Her husband, Rob, a systems designer, wrote her the first program and loaded it on a small handheld computer. Another dietitian said, "Wow! Where’s mine?" and COMPU-CAL was off and running.

As technology advanced, handhelds with larger memory capacities became available, and new programs were quickly added. The current COMPU-CAL handheld computers have over two hundred times as much memory as the first COMPU-CAL handheld – as much as some PCs had when COMPU-CAL was started – and a powerful array of programs. But we’re not resting! New programs and refinements are often added at the request of our dedicated and innovative users.

In 1996, COMPU-CAL, and the nutrition assessment profession, took a big step forward with the release of the Dietitian’s Assistant PC software after four years of development. With the almost limitless capabilities of modern PCs, we can now offer users nutrition assessment, patient tracking, customized reporting, and much more in one easy-to-use package!

In 2001, COMPU-CAL proudly released the Nurtition Assistant software for the "palm" personal digitial assistants (PDAs). This amazing application provides all the power of the COMPU-CAL SE handheld plus all the additional power of the palm platform to store address, to-do's, etc.
