   and "Pro" version also.

   The three most common problems:

If nothing appears to be physically wrong with your machine, the three most common problems are:

  1. The "Ram Card Eject" button on the back of the machine is not pushed all the way to the left. It needs to be all the way to the left toward the silver label..
  2. One or more screws is loose or missing. First, make sure there are TWO screws holding the back cover on. If not, call us for replacements. Pick up the computer and shake it. If it rattles, one of the inside screws is loose. Remove the back cover, replace and/or tighten the loose screw, gently tighten all other inside screws, and put the back cover back on.Regardless of whether a inside screw was loose, gently tighten both screws that hold the back cover in place.
  3. The batteries need to be changed. Batteries last anywhere from 4 months to 2 years. Batteries need to be on the "top" half of their cycle to power the computer correctly. So even if some battery checking guage tells you the batteries are "ok"... if it has been longer than 6 months... then the easiest/fastest/best strategy is to replace the batteries. See the battery changing directions.

  More serious problems:

  Immersion in water:

Handhelds can fall out of pockets into wet places (i.e. toilets). If your handheld falls in the water, shake it gently, dry the outside off, remove the back cover, remove the silver "Compu-Cal" label, push the "Ram Card Eject" button all the way to the right, remove the eprom (the little black box in the back), remove the batteries, dry under a warm (not hot), gentle blow dryer for at least 10 minutes, change the batteries, replace the eprom and lock into place, reboot your software (as described in the battery changing directions), and, hopefully, go back to work. Otherwise, the computer's body or in extreme cases the whole will need to be replaced (see below). Call us if you need help.

  Damaged computers:

If your COMPU-CAL handheld. has obvious physical damage such as:

  1. The screen is broken -- has one or more cracks, appears to contain black ink, or fails to display a digit.
  2. It has been immersed in water, milk, coke, coffee, etc. and the procedure above failed.
  3. The body is bent, broken, or smashed. This is difficult to accomplish, but possible. Do not allow doctors to smash cockroaches with your COMPU-CAL handheld. (Yes, it has happened and the worst part is, he missed!)
  4. Your COMPU-CAL handheld doesn't work inspite of having changed batteries, gently tightening the screws, re-booting, etc.

FINALLY... if you are reading this and the above has not fixed your COMPU-CAL handheld then it is probably at the end of its life. The GOOD NEWS is that you got at least 7 years and maybe as much as 20 years of life out of the COMPU-CAL PRO or SE. If you think about the fact that this is a long time for any technology these days... especially ones that are used as much as the COMPU-CALs tend to be. When you're ready... the replacement technology is the Nutrition Assistant software for a Palm handheld. See details on this website.
